The Association of Pool and Spa Professionals, the National Recreation and Park Association, and the World Waterpark Association have teamed up to promote National Water Safety Month this May.
Here is some more information from National Water Safety Month website:
In recognition of the popularity of swimming and other water-related recreational activities in the United States, the month of May has been designated as National Water Safety Month. The purpose is to highlight the need for ongoing public education on safe water practices and always being “water aware.”
This designation has been proclaimed as a joint effort of the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals, the National Recreation and Park Association, and the World Waterpark Association. These organizations represent businesses and other individuals and agencies involved in bringing safe, enjoyable aquatic activities to the American public, from home pools and spas to water parks and resorts to swimming and water recreation facilities.
National Water Safety Month can be celebrated through educational programs, public services announcements, governmental proclamations, and the distribution of water safety-themed materials, all aimed primarily at the public and designed to prevent drowning and water-related illness and injuries (source).
You can check out the website to download free promotional materials to post at your aquatics facility or online. Everything from artwork, to event planning guides, and even radio scripts are ready-to-download and use.
Here are what the Water Safety Month awareness posters look like. I really like the design because it appeals to kids but definitely gets the important message out.

Those are great materials! The design is simple but you really get the message across. Let’s all do our part in spreading the message. Excellent work, keep it up!
This is an absolutely critical subject, and it’s a shame how many parents don’t properly attend to making sure their kids are aware of, and follow, basic water safety guidelines.
It’s also crucial that children learn to swim – nothing is more heartbreaking than seeing teenagers at a pool or beach frolicking in the shallow water because they don’t know how to swim. These are the people who will panic in a real water emergency, and possibly drown! Everybody must know how to swim! There can’t be any exceptions!
Water safety isn’t just about swimming, though. Too many people seem to think that jet-skis are for swamping canoes and kayaks, for example. People need to be aware of safety issues for watercraft and observe them!
