B70 Is Back, Without Modifications

blueseventy is backThe blueseventy Nero suit is back on the FINA Approved Suit List per the release of the latest FINA announcement. You can read the press release on Swimming World Magazine, or get the blueseventy reaction from their blog post: blueseventy Body Suits Back in the Water.

The appended list, released after some additional delays, lists the suits that were approved by either re-submission with modifications, or by “arguments regarding the fact the construction or material of their swimsuits would not create air trapping effects.” (source)

The blueseventy Nero was one of the suits approved by the latter conditions. According to another article on Swimming World Magazine, found though Swim Tech Geek, “BlueSeventy called on the technical expertise of Huub Touissant of the University of Amseterdam to demonstrate that the suit does not trap air. On this basis BlueSeventy is not proposing any alterations be made to its existing suits.”

FINA’s statements regarding this, from the press release:

“…the evidence of “in use” air trapping effect is complex and that it would require considerable time to create and implement comprehensive control mechanisms and test methods which would permit to establish the effect with absolute certainty in connection with particular swimsuits … in cases where there was a reasonable doubt as to the effect, such doubt had to be taken into account in the decision concerning the respective swimsuits.” (source)

In other words, blueseventy was able to create ‘reasonable doubt’ in the testing protocol that allowed their suit to be approved without re-submission of a modified design.

The publication of an amended Approved List also coincides with the ratification of several world records. Of the records that were pending approval, one has been in limbo since February 11th. Check the FINA press release for the list of new official records.

Blueseventy Prepares Statement About FINA Suit List

The publication of the FINA approved suit list has caused quite a stir on the USMS.org discussion forum. Consider the fact that blueseventy is an official sponsor of US Masters Swimming, and the fact that none of the 11 suits they submitted appear on the approved list.

Enter Dean “Deano” Jackson on the message boards. Although it wasn’t an official statement coming from blueseventy, Deano did address the issue by explaining that it will be further addressed in a planned press release:

“Right now my friends we are working through the best solution to the short term situation once we understand the decision and process from FINA, and will in the next few days be working on a statement that will encompass all the issues raised in this forum. We care about swimmers, we care about our company and we care about fair play for all brands in this process” (source)

Deano also shared some unofficial details, staying that the suits were rejected because they “May cause significant air trapping when worn by the swimmers.” I truely sympathize with Deano when he says “We are confused!!!! and currently seeking clarification from FINA as to this and the steps to understand why suits of the same materials, construction and similar design are deemed legal but not ours…” (source).

It sounds like blueseventy is certainly a company with good intentions, but is also getting the short end of the stick when it comes to explicit feedback about how to make corrections in time for World Championships.

This information has not officially been released, and was provided to Tony at SCAQ Blog by an unknown source. I have not yet gotten in contact with blueseventy to confirm this information, but Tony says his source is golden.
