The Hardest Dive Ever Done… Back Triple With Four Twists

Gary Hunt, of Great Britain, decided going into the 6th stop of the Red Bull Cliff Diving Series that he would attempt the hardest dive yet performed in diving competition. In a video by RedBull.com, Gary said he never set out to be the champion, but that he just wanted to learn some new dives during the season.

Gary said that the dive requires a height of at least 26 meters to perform correctly, so he chose the Hamburg, Germany event to perform the dive. For competitions with lower “cliffs” he is comfortable with a back triple with three twists.

Back To Coaching, And Avoiding Swine Flu

Swine flu? That’s sooo 5 months ago.

Yesterday was the first day of practice for the Miami Redfins, the Miami University student club swim team, which meant the first day of diving practice as well! The team, which competes in the American Swimming Association University League (ASA.U), added a diving team last season – under the auspicious instruction of yours truly. And, although we competed in an un-sanctioned exhibition diving event at ASA.U Nationals last season, we are back this season to represent diving on the non-varsity college club participation-oriented intercollegiate level!

There’s nothing like being on campus at your Alma Mater during the school year – except when the Saturday headline of the Dayton Daily News read: 25 Miami students being treated for possible swine flu. Swine flu? Really?

The article states that the students tested positive for type A influenza, and that they are treating the cases as if they were H1N1 flu. None of the students were hospitalized, and symptoms were reported as mild. Cause for concern? Well people aren’t freaking out as much as they were in April, when the final stop of the World Series of Diving was met with empty bleachers in Mexico City. But I’m gonna keep a wary eye out for any sickly looking students…

LIVE Streaming Video From 2009 National Diving Championships

diving national championships 2009

The AT&T; 2009 National Diving Championships are being webcast LIVE all week on DiveMeets.com. (click here to watch)

The number of entries (127 in all) could be the reason the men’s and women’s 3-meter and 10-meter individual categories have been split into 4 rounds (prelim, quarterfinal, semifinal, final). But being Olympic events, whereas the 1-meter is not, the divers should also display a high level of consistency in order to final.

Kelci Bryant recently tweeted from the event: “Won one meter prelims with 292.05 – Finals tonight at 6 p.m.” (@Kelci_Bryant)

According to DiveMeets.com, she averaged 7 1/2 and 8′s on her list: 403B, 105B, 203B, 303B, 5333D.

Would The Real Tom Daley Please Tweet Up

fake tom daley

In a recent article on Telegraph.co.uk, Tom Daley, Britain’s World Champion diver, complained about an impostor who is actually out-matching himself for followers on Twitter.

“Someone is impersonating me on Twitter,” he complains, good-naturedly. “I’m TomDaley1994 but everyone’s suddenly started following TomDaleyDiver. I suspect it must be a girl because the tweets are really lame and uncool and she puts kisses at the end

Getting To Know Those Butterflies In Your Stomach

butterflies in your stomach

Everyone has probably experienced the feeling of butterflies in their stomach at some point. This classic metaphor describes the sensation of a “tickling” or “fluttery” feeling in the stomach that is generally associated with nervous excitement.

The sensation of butterflies is most likely caused by the release of epinephrine from the adrenal glands, which causes a chemical reaction in your body often associated with “fight or flight.” Epinephrine causes blood from non-essential body processes (like digestion) to be redirected to more immediate resources like the brain and muscles. This temporary loss of blood to the stomach is probably the reason for a number of symptoms of nervousness: loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and butterflies.

Generally, people would rather not experience butterflies before a big meet or event because they can be distracting, make you lose confidence, or second-guess how prepared you are. However, David Bellinger, a sport performance consultant with Excellence in Sport Performance (Pleasanton, CA) recently wrote an article for Gymnastike titled “Making Those Butterflies Fly In Formation” (link).

In his article, Bellinger says that “nervousness is only a problem if it prevents you from performing your best,” and explains that being nervous shows that you care about something or that it is important to you (like doing well in competition). It’s much easier to manage a few butterflies than it is to deal with a complete lack of effort, or apathy towards competition.

Bellinger continues:

“If you have butterflies in your stomach, the goal is not necessarily to get rid of all of them, but to get them to fly together in formation. You want to get the optimal amount of nervousness for you, and then channel your nervous energy into helping you perform your best.” (source)

Everyone has their own optimal energy level that will help set themselves up for the best possible performance. Identifying how you feel when you perform your best is the first step in managing your nervous energy. You wouldn’t want to decrease your nerves to the point that you don’t care about the competition, or increase your nervous energy to the point you get distracted and jittery. Finding your optimal balance is the key.

David Bellinger is a contributing blogger at Gymnastike (a gymnastics mirror to FloSwimming). You can find more of his articles HERE. Also check out related sport psychology content here on Kast-A-Way Blog.
